BITE ME! Toronto International Body Image Film & Arts Festival (19+ Adult Audiences)

BITE ME! Is a non profit arts, culture, media literacy and education organization. Its mission is to advance the public’s understanding of critical social justice issues pertaining to self discovery & identity through the body, representations and interpretations of body perceptions and body images. BITE ME! explores, challenges and redefines the contested “body beautiful” wrapped in our experiences of the provocative and the every day.  Join us for a 3-day exploration of body and identity stories from near and far—stories set to challenge the limits of traditional body image dialogue by addressing multiple images—body images and experiences informed by diverse race, religious and cultural backgrounds, genders, sexualities, classes, ages, abilities, geographies and histories among other social identifiers.  Everybody has a story. JULY 4-6:
BITE ME! Toronto International Body Image Film & Arts Festival’s YouthZone: Girls Empowerment & Self Esteem (Up to 50 Girls 10-17 years of age)

Young women today are bombarded with conflicting messages about how to perform and what counts as the so-called “it” girl. YouthZone tackles these stereotypes and encourages young women to become critical media citizens through a series of media literacy, arts-based and performance workshops and edu-tainment over a 3-day period. Using interactive film, digital & theatre-based mediums, girls get the tools to ‘bite back’ at the ‘isms’ inherent in stereotypical ideals of girlhood by exploring their own identities. Beyond the arts, girls will receive public speaking, debating, self esteem, healthy relationships and careers development workshops. Participants will have the opportunity to dine and learn from established Female Leaders (our Dames!) from diverse industries as part of the Dining with Dames closing segment on July 6. All participants must register for the 3 consecutive days as all participants will be exhibiting their work during the Girls Showcase on July 6.
